With a Turkish father, growing up without watermelon in the house as soon as spring arrives would be odd! We just LOVE our watermelon and my childhood summer memories are full of thirst quenching and refreshing watermelons. We also have ours with a slice or two of hellim (Halloumi). Sometimes melon gets forgotten about, it has such amazing health benefits. First, it is obviously great for a refresher, perfect for all this lovely hot weather (ok maybe not today!!). It is deliciously sweet so everyone can enjoy it without the guilt and the children will love it to! Watermelon also provides vitamins, minerals and antioxidants helping boost your immune system. Like tomatoes watermelons contain lycopene, which is the red carotenoid pigment that gives it the red colour. This antioxidant is powerful in neutralising harmful free radicals in our body and in return could lower cancer risks. It can also reduce your risk of sun related skin damage, which can leave you sunburnt and wrinkled.
