Turning 40 this summer was a big deal for me! Not only was I turning 40 but my husband too. If that wasn’t enough to celebrate we were also celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary!

We knew we wanted it to be special and to be surrounded by our close friends and all of our children.

With a lot of people to cater for and a vast age gap, we knew it had to be family friendly and fun.

My husband had surfing on his 40th bucket list so that’s when we considered Cornwall as our destination!

With everyone agreeing to a week in Cornwall, our search commenced.

Crantock Beach

Fish and chips at Rick Stein – Padstow

Porthminster beach – St Ives

St Ives

Roly’s Fudge

C-Bay Cafe – Crantock

Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen – Watergate Bay

I had definitely left it late in the day and trying to find somewhere that was affordable and could accommodate 17 people, adults and children included, was going to be challenging!

With several failed phone calls, I stumbled across ‘Colan Barton’ at Gorgeous places to stay.

I instantly knew that this was the property for me! It ticked all the boxes and even had a heated outdoor swimming pool. It’s charm and beauty grabbed me and I thought there’d be no chance in me securing a booking.
But low and behold there was 1 week remaining available and it only happened to be my birthday week!

This was meant to be!!

Colan Barton is situated near Newquay; the perfect spot for budding surfers.  We booked a morning at WAX Watergate Bay surf school for all of us to attend.

This was such a great experience and a real group bonding moment.

I don’t think I was fully prepared for how gorgeous Colan Barton was going to be. You don’t quite get the full energy of the property from the photos.

I was blown away with how much charm the place had even with 10 acres of land. There was the  main house and the piggery studios, which are 2 self contained apartments. Every area had something special about it.

It really had a feeling of a home from home and I instantly felt connected to it.

There was enough space for everyone to feel that they weren’t on top of one another. With 4 bathrooms and a downstairs toilet everyone had a sense of privacy.

We also had 2 kitchens, 2 living rooms and a separate dining room. It was easy to loose your children here – happy days!!

The main kitchen is the hub of the house with a large table that seats 10. This for me is key to any home!

You also have an AGA to play with to fulfil your inner country living life! I have always wanted to cook in one and sit around it keeping warm with a cuppa!

Can you see the picture in your head?!

As well as the heated outdoor pool, pool house and BBQ area, there is also a newly installed hot tub situated by the piggy studios. I took full advantage of this, managing to have some time out, away from all the hustle and bustle of family life! While I did that the kids were happily playing in the barn house where there is a table tennis and giant Jenga set.

Honestly at times you wouldn’t have known we were holidaying with 9 children!!

In the mornings you can take your coffee down to the calming waters of the pond for some peace amongst nature. You can even feed the fish too and even better is the amazing sunset you catch there in the evening.

There is nothing more peaceful than moments like these!

There is also a fire pit for those warm or cold evenings for you and the kids to toast marshmallows, share stories and look out for shooting stars.

We spent every evening out there, and it was the perfect spot to sit with a glass of wine once the children had gone to bed and catch up with our friends.

What makes Colan Barton even more special are the owners Sarah and Ross, and not forgetting their gorgeous dog Willow too.

Dealing with them was so easy from the start, leading up to our holiday and throughout. They greeted us with such warmth when we arrived and they gave us a tour to help familiarise us with everything. They checked in on us every few days via text and made sure we had all that we needed.

We even had bubbles on ice ready for arrival!

In their pack they suggested an in house chef which was something I had been considering.

Chef in my home offer a bespoke catering service and have an amazing menu for you to choose from. They are a friendly and down to earth company that are easy to deal with. They use ingredients grown in their own beds and anything they can’t supply they source locally.

Not only did I decide to book them for my birthday dinner, but also for a welcome breakfast for our first morning all together.

This was truly fantastic and something I highly recommend.

I seems sad to be writing this now as we really had an amazing time. Memories I will cherish forever and I am so glad that Colan Barton was available for us!

I would absolutely love to go back one day to recreate the magical time we had there.

Please note that this is not a paid review and all the words and experience are my own!
